Suhl-Goldlauter prison as central Thuringian transport centre
The Suhl-Goldlauter prison on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest was opened in 1991 and since then has provided space for 282 male prisoners in closed (262) and open (20) prisons. The four to five-storey facility is characterised by its modern infrastructure and high security standards.
As the central Thuringian transport centre, Suhl-Goldlauter Prison is responsible for the Thuringian circulation. This means that it is responsible for transporting prisoners between the Thuringian prisons. Goldlauter Prison has specially trained staff and modern transport vehicles that meet the high security requirements. Goldlauter Prison also serves as a Thuringian hub for the nationwide transport of prisoners. Prisoners from other federal states who need to be transported to prisons in Thuringia usually pass through Suhl-Goldlauter Prison.

Modernisation with HSL-C high-security locks from STUV
In 2023, the detention room and pass locks used for decades at Suhl-Goldlauter Prison were replaced with modern locks from STUV's HSL-C system as part of maintenance measures. The HSL-C system is an innovative locking system that was specially developed for the customised replacement of old locks in existing prisons and meets the highest security requirements. They were installed in various doors and gates:
- Passage door
- Detention room door
- specially secured detention room door
- Outer gate
