Wittlich Prison is the largest prison in Rhineland-Palatinate
With its 856 prison places, Wittlich Prison is the largest prison in Rhineland-Palatinate. Between 2004 and 2009, a state-of-the-art complex was built at a cost of 70 million euros, which includes a new detention centre, a new gate, an administration building and a 900-metre-long perimeter wall. The construction project contributed to a significant improvement in prison conditions and to strengthening the security of the prison.
Men in open and closed prison from the Koblenz and Trier regional court districts are admitted to Wittlich Prison.
Modern equipment for a contemporary prison system
The new detention centre at Wittlich Prison offers inmates modern accommodation. The cells are bright and friendly and have sanitary facilities. In addition, the prisoners have access to various communal rooms, workshops and educational programmes.
A particular highlight of the new building is the judge's room, which is equipped with modern video conferencing technology. This makes it possible to hold court hearings directly in the prison without having to transport the prisoners.
