Wittlich Prison is the largest prison in Rhineland-Palatinate
With 856 places, Wittlich Prison is the largest prison in Rhineland-Palatinate. Between 2004 and 2009, a state-of-the-art complex was built at a cost of €70 million, comprising a new prison block, a new gatehouse, an administration building and a 900-metre perimeter wall. The construction project contributed to a significant improvement in prison conditions and to strengthening security at the facility.
The Wittlich prison accepts men in open and closed detention from the district courts of Koblenz and Trier.
Modern facilities for contemporary prison management
The new prison building at Wittlich Prison offers inmates modern accommodation. The cells are bright and welcoming and equipped with sanitary facilities. In addition, prisoners have access to various common rooms, workshops and educational programmes.
A special highlight of the new building is the judge's chamber, which is equipped with modern video conferencing technology. This makes it possible to conduct court hearings directly in the prison without having to transport the prisoners.
