LVR Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry Essen: Modern facility for temporary accommodation

The LVR Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry in Essen is a modern facility with 54 places for the temporary detention of mentally ill offenders in accordance with Section 126a of the German Code of Criminal Procedure. Patients are accommodated here if there are urgent reasons to believe that they have committed a criminal offence in a state of incapacity.

Placement in the clinic corresponds in principle to pre-trial detention and serves to clarify culpability and prepare an expert opinion. Patients remain in the LVR Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry in Essen until their main trial, after which they may be transferred to a hospital for the detention of offenders.

Comprehensive diagnostics and treatment

The LVR Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry in Essen offers its patients comprehensive diagnostics and treatment. This includes

• Psychiatric and psychological diagnostics: Various diagnostic procedures are used to determine the patient's mental disorder and the background to their offence.

• Individual treatment planning: An individual treatment plan is drawn up for each patient on the basis of the diagnosis. This may include drug therapy, psychotherapy and social training.

• Forensic assessment: On behalf of the courts, the clinic prepares expert reports on the patient's culpability and prognosis.

• Preparation for a psychiatric hospital: If a patient is diagnosed with a mental disorder that poses a risk of further criminal offences, preparations are made for placement in a psychiatric hospital.
