Diez preventive detention centre: modern accommodation for dangerous offenders
In 2013, a new building for preventive detention was constructed on the site of the Diez preventive detention centre in Rhineland-Palatinate. The 19.5 million euro building offers space for up to 64 male detainees and meets the latest security and accommodation requirements.
The detainees in Diez live in modern single cells measuring 18 square metres. Each cell has its own bathroom and a small kitchenette. The cells are bright and friendly and offer the detainees the opportunity to organise their lives individually.

High security standards for the protection of the population
The Diez secure detention centre is equipped with state-of-the-art security technology to protect the population from dangerous offenders. This includes, among other things:
- HSL high-security locks from STUV: All doors and gates at the prison are fitted with HSL high-security locks from STUV. These locks are extremely resistant to tampering and picking and thus offer optimum protection against unauthorised access.
- Electronic monitoring: The prison is under round-the-clock video surveillance. In addition, the movements of those in preventive detention are monitored electronically.
- Trained staff: The staff at Diez detention centre are specially trained to deal with dangerous offenders.
- Single cells with private bathroom and kitchenette
New accommodation concepts for more security and resocialisation
The construction of the new Diez Preventive Detention Centre was an important step towards improving the accommodation situation for those in preventive detention in Germany. The modern security standards and the new accommodation concepts help to protect the population from dangerous criminals and at the same time improve the chances of resocialisation for those in preventive detention.
