Modern Bachtel correctional facility: open prison with a focus on rehabilitation
Since April 2021, the Bachtel correctional facility in Hinwil has offered space for up to 94 occupants with a total floor area of 4,440 m². The modern facility specialises in open detention for prison sentences and alternative sentences and aims to rehabilitate inmates.
The two-storey inmate wing with 52 places on the north-east side of the site is an extension of the existing inmate building from the 1960s. This new building provides modern accommodation for inmates and meets the requirements of open prison conditions.
The construction costs for the Bachtel detention centre amounted to CHF 44.5 million. The facility is run by the Canton of Zurich, represented by the Department of Justice and Home Affairs.

Open prison system for successful rehabilitation
The open prison regime is at the heart of the Bachtel prison concept. Prisoners spend most of the day outside the institution working, attending educational courses or maintaining social contacts. This promotes personal responsibility among prisoners and facilitates their reintegration into society after release.
Secure operation with high-security locks from STUV
Despite its open prison regime, the Bachtel detention centre ensures high security standards. The detention room doors play a major role in this. All detention room doors have been fitted with STUV HSL high-security locks, which offer optimum protection against unauthorised exit from the detention room. All inspection caps have also been fitted with these locks.
