Modern Bachtel correctional centre: open prison with a focus on resocialisation
Since April 2021, the Bachtel Correctional Centre in Hinwil has offered space for up to 94 occupants on a total floor area of 4,440 m². The modern facility specialises in the open execution of custodial and alternative custodial sentences and aims to re-socialise inmates.
The two-storey inmate wing with 52 places on the north-east side of the site is an extension of the existing inmate building from the 1960s. This new building provides contemporary accommodation for the inmates and fulfils the requirements of an open prison.
The construction costs for the Bachtel correctional centre amounted to CHF 44.5 million. The centre is run by the Canton of Zurich, represented by the Directorate of Justice and Home Affairs.

Open prison for successful resocialisation
Open prison is at the centre of the prison concept in Bachtel. Inmates spend a large part of the day outside the prison to work, complete educational programmes or socialise. This encourages inmates to take responsibility for themselves and makes it easier for them to reintegrate into society after their release.
Secure execution with high-security locks from STUV
Despite the open prison approach, the Bachtel detention centre guarantees high security standards. The detention room doors play a major role in this. All detention room doors have been equipped with high-security locks of the HSL type from STUV, which offer optimum protection against unauthorised access to the detention room. All inspection caps were also fitted with these locks.
