CHALLENGES
Challenges in the water management system
Water management is one of the most sensitive areas of critical infrastructure.
Modern facilities are digitally networked, decentralised and in operation around the clock – but at the same time they areincreasingly threatened by cyber attacks, physical sabotage, technical failures and the consequences of climate change. Extreme weather conditions such as droughts or heavy rainfall put systems to the test, while power outages or defective pumps can quickly jeopardise the supply of entire regions. Deliberate attacks and illegal discharges of pollutants also pose serious risks to the environment and health.
A failure of the water supply would not only have massive economic and ecological consequences, but would also shake the population's trust in state institutions.
Protecting water infrastructure is therefore essential – for public health, security of supply and the stability of entire regions. What is needed are comprehensive security concepts with flexible, documentable access solutions and resilient systems that reliably protect both technical and human vulnerabilities.
