Leipzig Prison Hospital: Modern new building for central medical care for prisoners
In 2022, a modern prison hospital with 80 beds was opened on the grounds of Leipzig Prison. Of these, 50 beds are for psychiatric patients, 25 beds are for somatic patients and 5 beds are for a wheelchair-accessible ward for elderly prisoners or prisoners with disabilities.
The neighbouring listed buildings of the original prison hospital were built in 1913 and are limited in terms of their structural possibilities. The new building will set a contemporary standard for central medical care for prisoners and offer comprehensive medical care of the highest standard.
The sickrooms are largely furnished in the same way as regular detention rooms. The sickrooms offer more space to move the beds around within and between the rooms. In addition to the sickrooms, the building will also house an outpatient clinic with an X-ray room and two specially secured detention rooms for violent or suicidal prisoners.
Highest security standards with HSL high-security locks from STUV
To ensure the safety of patients, staff and the general public, modern high-security locks of the HSL type from STUV were installed in the new Leipzig prison hospital. These locks meet the highest security requirements and offer optimum protection against unauthorised access. They were installed in the following doors:
- Custody compartment doors: HSL locks secure the custody compartment doors, ensuring the protection of inmates and staff.
- Inspection flaps: The inspection flaps in the cell doors allow meals and medication to be passed through.
- Specially secured cell doors: Two specially secured cell doors with HSL locks were installed for the accommodation of violent or suicidal prisoners. These doors offer additional protection against attacks and escape attempts.
- Passage doors: The HSL locks enable passage control so that no unauthorised persons can gain access.
