Challenges
Challenges for rail vehicles
The rail sector places some of the highest demands on materials and functionality. The key challenge is fire protection in accordance with EN 45545. Every component, from the seal to the handle, must strictly comply with limit values regarding flammability, smoke emission, and toxicity.
From a mechanical standpoint, locks in outdoor environments are subjected to extreme pressure and suction forces, particularly when passing through tunnels at high speeds. These cyclic loads can cause conventional mechanisms to loosen.
In the passenger compartment, on the other hand, the focus is on protection against vandalism and accident prevention (no sharp edges, flush installation).
In addition, the components must be designed to last 30 years or more, as maintenance intervals are long and downtime in rail operations is extremely costly.
